A takeoff of the original gin-based Alexander cocktail, the Brandy Alexander Cocktail combines cognac or brandy instead with cream and crème de cacao chocolate liqueur. It’s a luxuriously frothy drink originally credited to bartender Troy Alexander who created it in the early 1920s for an advertising campaign dinner. See the recipe below.
While the original recipe is fine as it is, sometimes we like to add a little grand marnier orange liqueur and then top with some grated dark chocolate, an indulgent experience that we’ve named a Brandy Bartholomew.
- 2 oz Brandy
- 1 oz Crème de Cacao
- 1 oz heavy cream
- grated nutmeg
- Chill a cocktail glass
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, add all the ingredients and shake for 20 seconds.
- Strain into the cocktail glass and garnish with grated nutmeg, or grated chocolate.
